A Math-free Introduction to Machine Learning

Defining Machine Learning

The concept of Machine Learning was invented back in 1959 by the Artificial Intelligence pioneer Arthur Samuel, which defined it as the “field of study that gives computers the ability to learn without being explicitly programmed”.

The Branches of Machine Learning

Now that we have seen what Machine Learning is, we will focus on the various paradigms that it contains. They are three branches of Machine Learning:

  • Unsupervised learning
  • Reinforcement learning
  • Regression
  • Child, adult or elderly?
  • How old is this person? (This is pseudo-continuous because the output will be an integer.)
  • Clustering
  • Anomaly detection
